Wazamazama re-elected Mzuzu University student leader
Wazamazama Katatu has been re-elected Mzuzu University Student Representative Council (MUSREC) president for the next year in elections held Monday, a rare feat in Malawi’s public universities’ politics.
Described as a fearless and focused leader by his supporters, Katatu said in an interview with Nyasa Times that he “will continue being a strong voice for the students.”
Both students and members of the University’s management who talked to Nyasa Times said Katatu was the “best choice” for a community that has occasionally been frustrated with lukewarm student leadership.
Among others, Katatu has said he will network students at the institution with various organisations that can support their research projects.
“It is one way I think will help students help towards contributing to their tuition,” he said.
He will be deputized by Okomaatani Kayenda.
Other new office bearers include Yewo Mgomezulu as Secretary and Aggie Majawa as her deputy.
Malachi Bright is new Speaker and James Kayira is his deputy.
Nyasa Times understands that Katatu’s re-election is largely because of his commitment to have his fellows back on campus after about three months following its closure due to staff’s demands for raised perks.
This is breeding dictators. Is he the only student at the whole Luwinga TTC? All students’ unions for various UNIMA and other colleges only present themselves once for elections (chair position). Again it is normal to elect those that are in their pre-final year. MZUNI, how could you elect a year 2 student to head the union? Very unheard of at Chanco and Poly.
