MCP elective convention on Saturday in Lilongwe
Main opposition, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is in rush preparations for party convention as some delagates say the party indaba is set to take place on Saturday.
MCP regional chairperson for the south Peter Simbi said he has received communication from party headquarters to prepare the delegates from the south to Lilongwe.
“I have been told that the convention is on this Saturday,” he said.
The Southern Region chairman said he was organising up to 104 delegates for the indaba.
Simbi’s story has been collaborated by the party chairman for the lakeshore, a Mr Chidzanja.
Reinstated secretary general Gustave Kaliwo said he had spoken with party president Lazarus Chakwera to hold the much awaited convention.
The MCP convention organising team met Thursday to tie loose ends on the preparations of the convention after the Malawi Supreme Court had set aside an injunction embattled Kaliwo and others obtained, effectively giving the party a leeway to hold an elective convention.
MCP president Lazarus Chakwera and the party’s national executive committee (NEC) obtained the order in Lilongwe on Thursday as earlier reported by Nyasa Times.
“It is hereby ordered that the interlocutors injunction granted herein by honourable Justice [Mike] Tembo in the court below the appellants , dated 8th May 2018 be and is hereby stayed pending the hearing of inter parties application for the stay hereby set down for hearing on 17th May 2018 at 14:00 hours before Hon. Justicd [Frank]KpandaSC, sitting in Lilongwe,”reads the order dated May 10 2018.
MCP deputy Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka said the May 17 hearing would be an academic exercise , saying the party was free to cold convention before May 17 and elect new office bearers.
This follows MCP emergency NEC resolution to reinstate him, first deputy president Richard Msowoya, first deputy secretary general James Chatonda and director of international relations Tony Kandiero who were suspended from their respective positions. The meeting also reinstated the expelled publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila.

Those who were saying that Mutharika is old have been properly shamed by the election of a 92 old in Malaysia. In fact, Mahathir Mohamad is one of the people who helped Malaysia achieve high economic growth.

Its better that kaliwo should be going for court injunction. This is topical politics all members of MCP are together even kaliwo kupita ku court wa chita bwino. Why? Kaliwo akufuna chakwera ndi msowoya adzapambane hence blocking new members by saying no convention.

IWE NANE, NOBODY IS RUSHING! THE CONVENTION WAS ALREADY ON THE CARDS AND ALL PREPARATIONS WERE DONE AND CONCLUDED. IT WAS KALIWO’S INJUNCTION THAT WAS STOPPING THIS CONVENTION. NOW THAT THE INJUNCTION HAS BEEN VACATED, MCP CAN GO AHEAD WITH ITS CONVENTION

Ecclessia, I wished all political parties took your advice concerning politics of poverty.
The reason why genuine MCP members like Kaliwo, Msowoya, Kabwira, Njobvoyalema and others are being persecuted today is because of politics of poverty. You may recall Kaliwo was there for Kamuzu during the Mwanza murder case, at that time where were Chakwera and Mia? This persecution of Kaliwo and team is because of the poor Lazaro and the rich Mia.
Hatton, MCP is not like your party which is a family party. MCP is open to everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you were there or not during Kamuzu Banda’s time. Your comments shows that you are brainwashed to the extent of believing that it is only those who were there during Kamuzu who can lead the party. I know its because you are used to see what is happening in your family party. We understand the basis for your reasoning.
I doubt if your brain works perfectly. If that is the case with Kamuzu, where do you find all those who were closer to Kamuzu? Dausi and the friends? This is new blood and new era. This is multiparty. He should learn to accommodate others.

It’s good for MCP.. Hope they can move forward now. My free advice. .Stick to bonafide members. Do not be fooled by money. Forgive one another. Be exemplary. Be a party of all malawi and. Empower the youth in decision making positions. Empower women too.
Please be quick before he (Kaliwo & Team) rushes to the Hague for another court injuction. It has been a long battle. Kaliwo and team knows where they stand politically now as no one would be willing to work closer to them. They are now useless folks who has to wait for another erand from their pay masters the DPP. Politics of poverty has no place in our modern democracy.
