Karonga United beat Moyale, earns first home win: Malawi TNM Super League

Karonga united winger  Bernard Msiska scored the lone goal to continue the newcomers impressive start to the TNM Super League  season with a 1-0 victory over toothless Moyale Barracks in a bruising encounter played at the Karonga Stadium on Sunday.

Karonga United wins at home

The game which was played in front of a full capacity crowd saw Karonga earn their first home win at their third  attempt that has also seen them climb to 7th with 9 points from 7 games.

The crocodiles of Karonga made a good start to the game dazzling the capacity crowd with their one touch football where Khumbo Msowoya and Anthony Mfune went close with shots outside the penalty area that went narrowly wide from Macdonald Harawa’s goal.

Despite Karonga United starting sharper between the two sides, the soldier  looked dangerous on counter attacks with the pace of Brown Magaga and the midfield craft of Crispin Fukizi.

Karonga took a deserved lead in the 24th minute following a rapid move that saw Benard Msiska clinically finish inside the deadly box past a helpless goal custodian Harawa.

Two minutes after the goal, Karonga should have doubled their lead but Anthony Mfune with a contender for miss of the season hit wide inside the penalty area when it looked easier to score from a Khumbo Msowoya cross.

The soldiers began the second half sharply exerting pressure on Karonga United’s well organized defense, playing off some neat one touch football without creating anything with their dominance.

Despite Karonga doing most of the chasing in the second half looked more likely to add to their score and went close to adding their tally on several occasions through Bernard Msiska and Anthony Mfune.

In the end the rookies comfortably hanged on for the victory led by the impressive William Bweto Mwalwimba who was immense at the heart of Karonga United’s defence.

Speaking in an post-match interview Karonga United head coach Christopher Nyambose, expressed delight of ending the hoodoo of not winning a home game.

“I’m really happy that we have found a winning formula at last at home. We were great today all around the pitch, well organized and defensively solid and the win was well deserved,” said an excited Nyambosi.

However Moyale Barracks assistant coach Victor Chingoka, blamed the lack of a cutting edge up  front and creativity for his sides defeat.

“We didn’t create enough chances today to cause karonga problems hence we can not complain about the loss, we were out thought and out fought and second best,” said a frustrated Chingoka.

The defeat leaves Moyale Barracks winless in four games and in 13th place on the log table with 6 points from 7 matches played to their name.
