50 Malawi police officers give govt 28 days to promote them or face lawsuit
Over 50 police officers who graduated from various public universities in the country have given the government up to 28 days to promote them twice or face lawsuit in court.
Gift Nankhuni, lawyer for the graduate officers said the police officers were discriminated against as their colleagues, who are not university graduates, have been promoted twice since July last year.
“They just want uniform implementation of the reforms and the promotions. My clients feel that they have been discriminated against by the police,” said Nankhuni.
The lawsuit summons number 735 filed at Lilongwe registry of the High Court of Malawi have the Attorney General as the defendant on behalf of the Malawi Police Service.
Attorney General Charles Mhango said his office would respond duly before the lapse of the 28 days given in the summons.
“We will definitely respond to the summons before the expiry of the 28 days,” said Mhango.
The police Inspector General Rodney Jose could not immediately comment on the allegations by the police officers.
This will be the first case of serving police officers suing the Malawi Police Service over promotion.
The truth be told, there are many police officers these days who attaining qualifications not relevant to their profession. We have seen police officers doing courses in Theology, Library Science, etc, the same applies with those at Malawi Prison Service, these qualifications do not add value to you work. Poti sukulu yaphweka masiku ano then all police officers want to be graduates ndi osunga akaidi omwe what for?
You must indeed be very foolish and idiot. Do you know that education itself is constitutional right? Why can’t you yourself enrol or attain a degree which is relevant to the institutions you are talking about. Have you ever heard of police administration degrees in Malawi. If you are indeed educated then i do not doubt, you were educated by mistake.
Umbuli tikukana ndi umene ukuonetsa apa iwe Agenda. Kuganiza ngati mbudzi. All police cannot attain law degrees. More over you seem not to be aware that education is a constitutional right. Sometimes if you are not conversant with issues, you just keep quite. Wamva iwe Agenda
Much as academic papers add value to someone elegibility for promotion but the employer is not always obliged to promote each and very person who has attained a higher academic qualifications. In some institutions they will thank you for attaining a higher academic qualification but leave you at your present post till such a time a vacancy appears where you can compete and be promoted to. If the so called graduates are not happy with their current rank/grades then they can apply outside the Police system and get the job they desire with their high academic credentaials as an employer… Read more »
You have completely missed the point. No no no Graduate police officers are not fighting for promotions. They are fighting for their grades to change two steps upwards, as enjoyed by other officers. Out of the population of fourteen thousand police officers in Malawi, only fifty THREE police officers had their grades not changed.
So that alone does not boarder on promotions
