Chikaonda no more: Malawi top economist died in US hospital
Top Malawian economist Dr Matthews Chikaonda has died at a California hospital in United States of America fter a long illness.
Family spokesperson Hyacinta Chikaonda has confirmed learning about the “devastating” news but said they will provide a statement on the funeral programme later.
His wife Violet, said she will remember Chikaonda as a “principled man” who loved his family and offered himself to “serve” the country with sense of patriotism.
Chikaonda is a former group chief executive officer at the dual-listed conglomerate Press Corporation Limited (PCL) and also worked as governor of Reserve Bank of Malawi.
But prior to that he served as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) from August 1994.
In January 1995, he was appointed RBM Governor and served in the post until March 2000 when he was appointed Minister of Finance and Economic Planning under the Bakili Muluzi administration.
He is famous for his 10-point plan during his tenure as minister.
Chikaonda is known for his witty insights.
He was born in August 1954.

Following all comments by so called saints am shocked. However, let me ask you a simple question “if he was your relative would you make such useless comments” secondly the Dead can not write or answer you then why wasting your time. Was there not any other good way of entitling your article? The phrasing …………..’Is No More……..’ sounds sheepish. It is true that it depicts death. However, it sounds somewhat queer to the ears. Of course when one celebrates over something, it is fine like the way it was understood in the novel, ‘Things Fall A Part’ by Chinua Achebe where it said, …..’have you heard, Abame is no more’. I am not English, but some idioms etc sound difficult to the ear. It is like saying…….so and so has kicked a bucket, meaning the same death.
However, reading many comments by other people who were touched by the life of this man, it may be true, a title befitting the description.
I did no know the man but the sentiments coming speak a different story altogether! It seems some Malawians are still going through pain over what happened!

The guy openly hated MTL and promoted TNM yet TNM was MTL child, for this alone, i have hated this guy since then, MTL was owning TNM, when press wanted to buy MTL they only paid for MTL leaving its child TNM taken without any fees attached, what a day robbery it was, when that happened, he proved that the purpose of buying MTL was to get TNM and not MTL he then started implementing policies aimed at killing MTL and promoting TNM, i remember MTL also wanted to go GSM they had bought equipments in portugal to deploy that, Chikaonda said MTL will not deploy that as they can kill TNM coz thats their main business, 2 yrs later TNM wanted to be an ISP provider but lacked ISP licence, they were forced to buy BURCO ISP provider so that they can use their Licence to offer ISP services which was the primary services of MTL, all these happened because of Chikaonda double standards and he endorsed such rubbish because the guy had lots of shares in TNM with his friend ANAKDAT OF FMB, this is why TNM despite the monies they have they still rent in a property of a shareholder ANAKDAT which is against Corporate Governance rules, all he cared is greed for himself, well rest well in hell brother Mathews no one misses u
