HRDC suspends anti- Ansah protests over Supreme Court appearance

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) have postponed the demonstrations  on Thursday and Friday to call for the sacking of  Jane Ansah as the head of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)  to pave way for court sanctioned mandatory peace talks with the government.

Protesters want the head of the Malawi Electoral Commission Jane Ansah to step down over her handling of the disputed May presidential elections.

HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo has confirmed the protests  will not take place Thursday and Friday “with exception of Karonga who still holding vigil.”

He said:“Today [Thursday], we will be preparing for the meeting at the Supreme Court, some of us will be travelling to attend the meeting on the 14-day moratorium.”

He said Friday is the actual day of the meeting between the HRDC and the Attorney General at the Supreme Court to find best ways of holding the protests peacefully.

“People could have gone to the streets on their own but we feel we should always be with them, we should not leave them alone, they need our leadership in such situations,” said Mtambo.

The HRDC held protests on Wednesday which were generally peacefully apart from the incidents when some journalists were beaten up by demonstrators.

Protesters demonstrated in the capital in the capital Lilongwe, in the commercial centre Blantyre and in the cities of Mzuzu and Zomba.

They demand Ansah to step down as MEC chairperson over her handling of the disputed May presidential elections.

According to the official results, President Peter Mutharika secured a slim margin of victory over opposition chief Lazarus Chakwera.

Gift Trapence, vice chairperson of the HRDC said they had presented a petition to Parliament.

Official show Mutharika won 38.57% of the vote to Chakwera’s 35.41%, with former vice president Saulos Chilima third, on 20.24%.

But the two opposition leaders said there had been irregularities in the vote-counting process and both have joined some of the subsequent protests.

We said that mtambo is stupid but a good number of some commentators continued supporting his demos. Now what you should know about human psychology is a person gets exhausted doing the same thing over and over again. The exercise bevomes monotonous and this is what has happened with mademo. Now whats next for hrdc members? Please learn to be objective in your activities otherwise you are going to become obsolete very very soon.

Koma able let’s face facts. What good can come out from this open mouth. Guys these people are being misused instead of going to hunt for mice in the bush. Even you send them to America or UK they will look the same. In other countries they will end being burnt for accusing them of witchcraft. Photographers ,spare these people from appearing on media. People think all Malawians look like this man,Simakanja uyu kapena jang’wi’ng’wi?
