Judiciary blows up K240m on Malawi presidential election case
Judiciary says it has so far spent K240 million hearing the landmark presidential election case and says the budget is likely to go up.
Registrar for the High Court and Supreme Court Agnes Patemba conceded this was not the money the judiciary budgeted for, saying it is way up.
“We budgeted for less because we did not know the nature of this case and how much it would cost.
“We therefore keep on asking the Treasury for more funding and the budget is likely to go up because the case is not yet concluded,” she said.
She said the budget will further balloon should the case go to the Supreme Court for appeal after the Constitutional Court verdict most likely early next year.
Patemba said the judiciary has learnt a lot out of the case which include the need to train interpreters.

Am happy because the case is of national interest. Some criminals under the Tippex Party are stealing billions daily without being caught.Nkhalamba zausilu shupiti.
Nearly 600mt of Fertilizer spent on some politicians greed? cry my beloved Malawi
she has not said who will appeal though.
It’s obvious. The petitioners apaja onse adaliuza khothi kuti mavoti sadakhudzidwe ndi zolakwikazo.
The Court has also discovered mismanagement, irregularities or whatever on their part which needs more training in managing future cases and so is MEC, I guess!
So u mean there is a room for appeal ? kkkk Pitala uja adakalamulila basi sizitithandizapo izi
The amount is nothing if we consider the state of affairs in the country and the need to turn around out bad politics to good politics. Secondly, the money being looted by DPP and its cadets is far more than what the case has blown. In fact billions are being looted, which denies citizen the much needed service delivery.
Truth is not cheap!
Malawians want to know the truth even if you bankrupt the country all we want is nothing but the truth!
This why when people say Malawi is poor I then feel very sorry for such kind of people. If one part that makes the government (Judiciary) is able to spend 240 million kwacha in less than 59 days for hearing one case, should we really believe that Malawi is poor or the problem we are facing is mismanagement of the funds?
Money shud not be an issue here.
What is very important is the truth about the whole elections process
However, for Agness Patemba to suggest that there will be an appeal is to say the least insulting Malawians.
How cud she say that
Does she insinuate that judges haven’t yet finished raking in monies ?
I thot I heard that Constitutional court’s judgment is final ?
Nanga za appeal zi zikuchokeraso pati ?
Bwinotu bwino !!
My understanding here is that if Peter (likely looser), or Chakwera/Chilima (likely winner) are not convinced with the outcome of judgement, they all have right to appeal. So as a contingent which is likely to happen it’s also been included
Even if yitakhala 2 billion palibe vuto…..bola chilungamo chiziwike….
