‘Disgusting’ KFC restaurant shut in Lilongwe over hygiene concerns
Lilongwe City Council officials have shut down a restaurant of fast-food giant KFC in the capital city after its staff were caught depositing human waste in a drainage along the main M1 road.

Council officials accompanied by armed police arrived at the restaurant situated near Lilongwe City mall to force management close down the restaurant.
However, there was a stand-off for some time as management refused to close down.
The management gave in after the council served them with a closure order.
All staff and the management were ordered out of the restaurant and the restaurant was closed.
The staff and the management were later engaged in discussions outside the restaurant following the closure.
LCC Public Relations Officer, Tamara Chafunya said that, LCC management team conducted patrol where they discovered that KFC restaurant does not obey the bylaws of the council concerning sewer system drainage.
“On 16th April some of our management team was patrolling the city and they caught people under the supervision KFC Restaurant Manager emptying restaurant’s Septic Tank and disposing the wastes into open storm water drain that runs along M1 Road going to Mbowe,” Chafunya said.
Chafunya said the authoritirs will reopen KFC Restaurant after the officials of the restaurant fulfills the demands of the city council which includes; treating the storm water drain where the septic water was being discharged.
She said that this will be done in the presence of council officials.
LCC has also asked City Mall Plot Managers to demolish all related structures of septic tank which are outside the City Mall Plot and are in the M1 Road Reserve, in order for the KFC Restaurant to be reopened.

Well done LLCC for a job well done. May I ask that once in a while you should also be patrolling the Gateway Mall to Bunda turnoff bypass as well as most times there are lorries carrying garbage from Area 9 and most of this garbage ends up on the tarmac road which a health risk as well as endangers the life of motorists.
Akuluakulu mwati mmimba mumatentha mpaka kupambukila ku restaurant?..iyi nde serious business, sizamacheza 😅😅
KFC should be fined with no compromise. Ask them to meet all required standards. Deport all managers. BLANTYRE City Council please visit KFC Blantyre I can assure you we have a similar problem. But then all councils in the county should do the same in all food selling outlets. They should feed us shit we need food.
It’s not just a question of reopenning. These are serious offenses they should face the law!!!!
That place stinks like **** cockroaches all around the building. These guys are not serious!!!!!
You lie. Iv never seen cockroaches! If you want to see cockroaches go to shoprite
ife sitinadyeko ku KFC …mwina akazalowa wathu Mbakuwaku nafe tizalowa nawo KFC
Hahahahaha KFC Malawi is owned by the Transglobe mafias, the guys behind Chaponda maize scandal
Crooks to the bone. They import chickens instead of buying local chickens, claiming that they are of low standard
Crossroads hotel is also making a mess in Lilongwe. The city council should also take time inspecting right outside the hotel fence.
And what is the Beautify Malawi doing, I thought they are the ones to ensure hygiene and not only beauty of our cities?
what happened to Tamara?
With that kind of behavior temporary closure is not adequate I would have preferred permanent closure ,and the management should not be allowed to run a food related business they can do hardware business.or construction
This is the end of business on this area and not for KFC only but other related business as well
This is true I literally saw these Asian guys monitoring some of their Malawian workers atatenga human waste nkumataya without gloves.Very sad anthu we need to boycott KFC
The city councill should be commended for this.
But should not be selective in its approach to sanitation in the city.
The city should also visit the markets at chinsapo , area 25 nsungwi , kawale, main market in devil street, and all other markets in the city. The city should clean the mess in those markets.
What a load of bullshit I was there on Monday when Kfc officials were talking to the land lord to tell him
To sort out his sewage which was coming from the mall itself. They issued concerns about the hygiene it’s doing to the restaurant. So Why damage a brand and lie nyasatimes?
Malawi amenyeo instead of moving forward moving backwards. Bwanji ku LILONGWE market ? Have you seen the crap there yet they sell vegetables – raw food. Wake up malawi !!!!!!
Tamara Chafunya akuwopsya chonchi? Where did that ‘beauty’ go?
I thought it was only me who noted. eeeeeeish!
Inu mwafuna muyankhule za maokenekedwe eti? kungomva zoti okaona nyanja anakaona ndi mvuu zomwe eti!
.
But who follows bylaws in Lilongwe. Visit the Lilongwe market, bus station etc why are these places still open for business.
City Assembly should be commended but looking at the bigger picture it seems the landlord is at fault. The owner of City mall shopping complex has an obligation to ensure that their sewer system is working properly. I feel the best KFC can do under the circumstances is to put pressure on the Landlord whose poor sewerage system has in essence affected their fast food business. It is indeed unhygienic and not befitting international standards for one to eat food in such poor hygienic conditions. Do not be selective in your closures as next door hotel complex looks to have another sub standard sewerage system.
Thank you! I love Kfc and seriously I’d be sad to see it closed for a silly matter whereby it wasn’t there fault but the malls…
