JBFI interacts with College of Medicine students
The Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) on Thursday held an interactive meeting with students the organization sponsors at College of Medicine In Blantyre.
Through the Edith Mtila Scholarship programme, JBFI is pays fees for 20 students at College of Medicine.
The foundation sponsors over 200 students at various colleges including Chancellor College, Polytechnic, College of Medicine, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Mzuzu University.
JBFI also pays fees for selected needy students at Malawi’s technical colleges, including for others studying in Russia.
At the meeting, representatives from JBFI Madalitso Banda and Levison Mwase conveyed an assurance message from the foundation and its founder Dr. Joyce Banda that JBFI will continue with the scholarships programme.
According to Mwase, the meeting was also meant to learn how the scholarships are benefitting the students and what challenges they are facing in their studies.
“It was also meant to encourage the students to work hard in class and excel in their studies as well as show good behavior,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of fellow students, Florence Msiska, a first year Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery student thanked the foundation and Dr. Joyce Banda for the sponsorship.
She said the sponsored students consider Joyce Banda their parent because through the sponsorship they are assured of completing their studies.
Msiska implored JBFI to continue supporting needy students, sayings many boys and girls are failing to realise their dreams because of economic problems of their families.
She, however, asked for more support to help the students ease some of the challenges they are facing at the school such as high cost of food, accommodation and stationery.
Msiska said the students also need more support to source additional learning and laboratory equipment.
The interactive meeting is part of an on going exercise to assess the impact of the scholarship progranmme and learn from the students how they are benefiting from the scholarships and challenges they are facing.
JBFI also runs a free secondary school known as Msigalira in Zomba, operates over 30 child care centres and pays fees for needy secondary school students throughout the country, among many programmes.
