A third year student at Livingstonia University in Rumphi has died after drinking beer excessively on an empty stomach, Malaiw Police have confirmed.
While confirming the development to Nyasa Times, Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Tupeliwe Kabwilo identified the deceased as Emmanuel Phiri from Nkhoma Village in Lilongwe district .
“He was a third year student at the University and it is believed that the deceased was a habitual drunkard who used to take alcohol on an empty stomach,” said Kabwilo.
According to sketchy details, on October 10 2018, Phiri spent the whole day drinking beer without eating anything and later in the evening he fell ill.
“He became unconscious due to nose and mouth bleeding. This forced his fellow students with assistance from Lecturers to take him to Gordon Mission Hospital where he later suddenly died in the process of getting blood transfusion,” said the Police Publicist.
Postmortem conducted revealed that the death was due to ‘Hypoglycemia’.
Police are therefore warning the general public particularly the youth to quit the behaviour of excessive drinking or avoid taking alcohol on an empty stomarch as a measure of reducing similar cases in the future.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
