Malawi govt cracking down on absentee teachers, 13 fired

Ministry of Education is cracking down on absentee teachers, officials said Monday.

Teacher’s absenteeism

Government has since fired over 13 primary school teachers in Chikhwawa for absenteeism.

District Education Manager for Chikhwawa Chrissie Chimsale has confirmed the development, saying there was need to bring sanity in the education sector.

“Victims were learners, their right to education was infringed upon and we could not allow this any longer,” said Chimsale.

This is the first time that the government has fired teachers in such numbers at once. Some primary school teachers continue to work in business as usual style with absenteeism and late going to work.

Chimsale said it was disappointing that most of the teachers who abscond from work are from Chikhwawa who were supposed to be examplary in giving education to their kinsmen.

She said her office continues to abscond from duties and warned they will be fired.

There was a high absenteeism rate in the district when over a 100 teachers did not get their December salary but the district education manager said this was not reason enough to abscond from duties as such things happen in government now and then.

I feel sad to hear this. Both teachers and the government are totally wrong. Long time then I would see in the faces of teacher being happy people and had never seen seen committed employees as teachers. Now things have changed did we try to do a research and analyse why the has been a sudden change? Madam before you recommend firing of people sit down first and think where also you are not meeting the needs of the people. How can you feel if your own son or daughter be working and get a meager salary not even on… Read more »
