MPs accuse govt of ‘marginalising’ North Malawi

Members of Parliament from the north speaking in the 193 strong National Assembly  have accused the government of sidelining the north in development activities.

Mzimba South West MP Harry Mkandawire demanded answers from the government why the multi billion kwacha massive Chinese developments are not allocated in the northern region.

He accused the Peter Mutharika administration of “systematically marginalising” the northern Malawi.

Mkandawire also accused the government of neglecting the north in terms of development activities.

Rumphi  East MP Kamlepo Kalua threatened to “bring down” the DPP government if it continued sidelining the north in development activities.

Kalua, one of the politicians who fought gallantly against one-party dictatorship and championed democracy, did not specify how he would bring down the government.

He also claimed that Judge Charles Mkandawire was left out as Clerk of Parliament job because he is. a northerner.

But leader of the House Francis Kasaila said Kamlepo could not hold the DPP government to ransom as he did with the United Democratic Front (UDF) government when he wanted “something personal” from former head of state Bakili Muluzi, vowing he DPP-led government would not be cowed.

“Mr. Deputy Speaker, I know that my honourable colleague used to threaten UDF [United Democratic Front] so that he could get something at the end of the day. DPP will not fall into that trap. Therefore, nothing will come to you even if you threaten the DPP,” Kasaila said.

Kasaila said it was not true that the DPP government is marginalising the northern region on development activities.

He then mentioned a number of development projects for the north, saying development projects are spread across the country and no region can be sidelined.

    You may have numbers but we have the will and the technology which you can’t match. Just dare. You are right this is not Yatuta time, it is the time that actually favour the north without elaborating.

    The issue here is fully funded development projects which are all put in the south while the north only gets promises of development projects which have no funding certainty. Sometimes you tribalistic southerners should be honest with yourselves and try to be objective. FUNDED, FUNDED is the key for whole argument on north development projects. We don’t a project that starts then stops, starts stops because there is no money. That is how you dpp thugs do north projects.

    You northerners who advocate federalism are just wasting your time. The shortcut is secession which guarantees us full independent And management of our own affairs and natural resources.

    North mps, keep on the fire in parliament because the four north cabinet thugs are so dumb and stupid, total saleouts. I want you to hold the press conference which you promised so that the whole world and country know what our grievances are.

    Those saying the North is sidelined should cite which projects earmarked for the North have not been done or are being sidelined.
    If there is any let it commence forthwith.If there was no project on the drawing board,then this time around the North has missed the train.
    The way government projects are done,we see some take 5 years planning and may be 3 years execution.If you say DPP has sidelined the North when is the blame starting from? DPP has been in office for 2 to 3 years only.
    The projects that have qualified for the Chinese aid now some are not DPP (Peter) drafted. They could be PP,DPP (Bingu),UDF or even Kamuzu’s.

    Before politicians from the North start complaining that their region is being “tribalistically” marginalised which is a dangerous political statement,I would rather they peruse National Development Plans, National Projects,etc and their time frames.Funding of a project comes from there.If the North is not mentioned there, then we have a problem.Policy makers are to blame.If it is mentioned and has been changed by ”Alhomwe” then take them to task.Osawasiya!!!!

    However,am afraid we have few statesmen in parliament.The majority of MPs (not only from the North!) are ordinary political agitators.They bring market place politics in the National Assembly before they read related government literature that is there e.g. concerning regional development.It appears to me some have been harbouring radical thoughts which they want just to air out in Parliament to embarass others. Always talking about or inciting talk surrounding ‘Nepotism’,’Tribalism’,’Regionalism’ instead of tackling real issues.

    Look how the current regime struggles to establish all big facilities in the south as if other regions don’t need them, eg TTC on Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Machinga, Blantyre, later in Chikwawa among others.

There is no Youth Centre in the entire region, no plans for a stadium yet we hear there are plans no construct a new one in Blantyre. All tarmac road networks are done in the South and centre. How the north is still part of Malawi baffles me. An independent Northern region is the way forward. Moreover some of us lost interest in this country called Malawi which is the poorest in the world. Ya you got me right, the poorest in the world. Let’s leave this sorry state in the hands of the Mutharikha kings to scramble with the Chakweras of this world. Mr Mkandawire – we can not allocate funds intended for the Chichiri air port of Blantyre to Mzimba in order to make the Mzimba people happy, the 7 projects must be allocated as funds has been intened to do – for Mzimba/Mzuzu time will come after 5 years where we will talk of how to develop the north.
    The northern citizens must start the development initiative, such that donors and sponsors can come on the board.

    Kayerekele is in the north – there is more of development which can crop up from these minerals, the leaders of the area must have objectives and projects viable for funding, present them to the proper offices and you will see development coming. Instead you cry to an extent of wanting to turn the north into a stand alone country – what is this? Malawi is just a province if we are to compare with other African countries; the like of South Africa, Mozambique and The rebulci of Congo, why should a person big enough to think and stand and talk of Mzimba to be a country?

  58. The Northern Region has only 5 + 1 districts compared to over 20 districts in both the Southern and Central Regions. If developments are shared based on regions or districts, it is therefore expected that the north will have to wait a little longer to have its next share of development as it will have to come after both South and Centre have gotten their shares. The north should therefore stop politicizing the issues of infrastructure development based on regional lines.

  60. Kayimbi, it is not tax. Human capital as well. North has more educated people than central and South combined, meaning that they contribute a lot of national development. Just look at Goodall Gondwe. He has worked for UDF government as an economic adviser, Minister of Finance under Bingu, Minister of Finance under Joyce Band, Minister of Finance Peter Mutharika. Does that not surprise you that he has worked for every government?
    If you go to the north today almost every village has a graduate. They do not count MEC holders. Drop out rate in schools in the north is lower than in the centre or south. Have you seen beggars in the north?
