Police officer in hospital for suicide attempt after breakup with lover

A 26-year-old police officer is admitted at Ntcheu District Hospital after attempting to commit suicide by taking poison after breakup with a lover.

The cop, Sergeant Fatsani Khwiya, is said to have taken poison to terminate his own life.

Public Relations Officer for Ntcheu Police Station, Hastings Chigalu, confirmed the development.

A statement recorded at Ntcheu Police Station indicates that Sergeant Khwiya, whose number is B4894 and hails from Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba District, was in a love affair with Estery Nyirenda who works with the Department of Forestry and is based at Njolomole Extension Planning Area (EPA).

It further states that the two quarreled on 5th March over their affair and Khwiya assaulted the lady. Displeased with the assault, the lady announced an end to the affair.

Then on 9th March, the cop bought some pesticides at Tsangano Turn Off and proceeded to his lover’s place at Njolomole. He found her house locked and went behind the house where he took the poison, intending to kill himself.

A well-wisher found him battling with life and rushed with him to Ntcheu District Hospital.

Attempting suicide is a crime under the laws of Malawi and one can be slapped a jail sentence.
