Jumani’s uncle gets emotional after media question on his nephew’s link to Kamuzu

James Kaunda, uncle to Jumani Johansson—the man who claimed to be son to Malawi’s first president Hastings Kamuzu Banda but died suddenly of heart failure last week—has said the family can neither confirm nor dismiss possibilities that his nephew was Banda’s child.

Jumani: Claimed he was Kamuzu’s son
Kamuzu: Was known to have sired no child

Kaunda, brother to Mirriam Kaunda a mother to late  Jumani the Miss Malawi 1976, told reporters  that what the family knew was that he was “one of our own.”

He said: “He [Jumani] was my sister’s son. And, he has been part of our family all these years. He was born at Ekwendeni [Mission Hospital] here in Malawi.”

According to Kaunda, Jumani has on a number of occasions visited his mother’s village—where he is due to be buried this weekend.

Pressed to comment further on whether Jumani was indeed Kamuzu’s son, Kaunda sounded a little disturbed.

“Why is everyone talking about this Kamuzu thing? Can’t we please concentrate on the funeral?” queried Kaunda.

Kaunda said since leaving Malawi when she worked for the defunct Air Malawi as hostess his sister—Mirriam—left for Sweeden where she had been living with her husband and family until she died in 2017.

“She asked to be buried in Sweden—according to her will. But she belonged here. She is a part of us,” said Kaunda.

Jumani will be buried at Lusangazi in Mzimba, her mother’s home, as some family members are yet to jet into the country.

He died on Saturday at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech) in Blantyre, leaving unanswered questions regarding his paternity.

His mother claimed Jumani’s father was Muhammad Jogee, a Malawian of Indian descent and a chartered accountant who moved to England years ago.

What does it help you to talk about human wastes? Both are dead and we have to move on with life. Kamuzu chose not to have children and there was nothing that could prevent him from raising his own children if he looked after his sister’s children well like Mr. Kazombo and Gogo Chensmdawaka who is mother to Ken Kandodo, Khumbize Kandodo and many more. Kamuzu looked after the Mzazas, Edwin Banda etc. He even looked after Hannock Msokera family. He built houses for his family at Chiwengo. He built houses for women like mai Hilda Manjamkhosi, Chiponda, mayi Tsamwa… Read more »

Some people may vehemently attempt to bury the truth for now. Unfortunately it won’t be for ever. At some point in time even Kaumuzu’s body will be exhumed for true biological identity. It may be not in the life time of those who for strange reasons do not want this whole topic to be talked about at all.

Kamuzu and his concubines deserved strict privacy in their age/time –now the truth is unfolding because of this democracy we are enjoying –more and more children of Kamuzu will come out let’s regard /take them as our own — it happens nobody can disclose everything to everybody for what ? what is their business in other people’s affairs ?

The problem was with Kamuzu himself. If indeed was one of us as a Malawian why was he keeping secret about his sexual affairs and family? He was a human being like everyone else, but he wanted to be treated like second god on his own, now many stupid Malawians are busy asking who was Kamuzu instead of concentrating to their lives. ULEASI BASI.

Kamuzu and his concubines deserved/deserve their strict privacy kind of life and it shouldn’t bother us —everybody chooses the kind of life he/she wants to lead —more and more children of Kamuzu are coming for goodness sake otherwise —

Looking at skin pigmentation and other features and also the mother’s statement that he is son of Muhammad Jogee, I tend to agree.
If in doubt then a Jogee/Jumani DNA test will solve the issue. It’s that simple.

The last sentence in the story reads and I quot: “His mother claimed Jumani’s father was Muhammad Jogee a Malawian of Indian descent and a chartered accountant who moved to England years ago”. P Chichewa pali mwambi woti “Chigololo ndi mwini thako”. So ngati mwini thako akuti bambo a Jumani si Kamuzu then why are busy believing this baseless claim of a son who was just an egg and a sperm when his mother slept with the real biological father? Sweeden and UK are just so close, why didn’t he follow his father in UK? Who told him that his… Read more »

Banda, we are talking of Kamuzu here. He was untouchable. No one could have said she was pregnant and the responsible person was Kamuzu, she will disappear. Muhammad Jogee lived in London, but Jumani’s mother in Sweden, ask yourself why different countries if they were married. Jumani was of sound mind, his mother revealed the truth about the father of Jumani to him. Jumani did not have features of an Indian , but surely of Kamuzu. They will discuss in heaven. In the presence of Jehovah, there is no secret. All the three have gone, and one judge standing before… Read more »

From what Jumani was saying on his FB wall (which has been deleted, God knows why), Mirriam Kaunda was also not his mother. Kamuzu brought Jumani to the family of Johanessen’s to be raised up there. Jumani grew up thinking that Mr Joahnnsen and Mirriam Kaunda was mum and dad until someone anamutsina khutu. when Jumani challenged Mirriam Kaunda for a DNA test, she refused. Jumani has been failed full time.

@Mbuya I feel sad about the whole Jumani (Banda) saga. How he’s been shafted big time by being denied the right to know who his real parents were!
How can Kamuzu Banda’s soul rest in peace, considering the life he lived, and sins he committed?

Its because his mother was fond of looking at pictures of Kamuzu. That enabled her brain to have substantial perception and memory systems that categorised information about Kamuzu’s pictures into fewer and simpler units, which eventually allowed for more efficient information processing !! The pictures stuck into her mind …

Only a mother knows a child’s father. Miriam Kaunda said Juman’s father is Muhammad Jogee a Malawian of Indian decent.

What’s all this Kamuzu fuss?
